When Dreams Become Reality (Personal Goal Setting)
A New Year is the time when we look ahead, see what’s on the horizon and figure out what we want to change or achieve in the coming days, months or years. What do you dream of doing?
In our personal life we call them resolutions. I will lose weight, get in shape, get out of debt, save more money, take time off to enjoy life. At work we call them goals. Corporations set strategic goals, salespeople set quarterly goals, while others have goals of improving customer service, shortening processes, getting more done with less, and some just hope to stay employed and survive the next wave of lay-offs. Maybe you’re looking farther, like retirement. There are a lot of different areas to look at to set goals in;
Mental, Physical, Spiritual, Family Life, Social, Financial, and Professional. You can even work on more than one goal at a time. You may have a physical goal of getting in better shape, while setting goals to better manage your finances, while spending more time with your family, while getting more involved in a professional organization (like ODEA) while . . . You get the point.
What are your greatest strengths? What are your biggest weaknesses? These are the things that will both help and hinder you in making your dreams reality. Your weaknesses are the obstacles that block your path. (like kryptonite to Superman) Are there obstacles that always stop you or prevent you from reaching your goals. Identify those obstacles and create a plan to knock them out of the way. Your strengths are qualities you possess that will make things happen. (Kind of like Batman’s utility belt, and all the gadgets that get him out of tough situations.)
